HUPO Test Samples (Eqimolar) 2007 Data Collection

This page documents the use of the ProteomeCommons.org Tranche network for collection of the HUPO Test Samples (Eqimolar) 2007 data. Here you will find details of how the data upload process works and who you can contact for help or further information.

A brief list of the commonly asked questions and bits of advice often helpful in using the Tranche/HUPO upload tool.

Other helpful information

How is my data uploaded and is it anonymous?

Data is uploaded using a customized version of the Tranche upload tool. Click here to launch the uploader. The entire process is anonymous and all of your data is encrypted to keep it private. You will be asked to provide an e-mail address for sending confirmation of a data upload. If you would like absolute anonymity, you do not have to use your personal e-mail address. You can use Spambox.us to create a temporary, totally anonymous e-mail.

Please note: no automatic measure is taken to ensure that any personal or identification information is stripped from the files that you upload. For example, if you include a README.txt file that states your lab's name and location, this information won't be removed by Tranche. We will attempt a best effort approach at removing this information before publishing the study's data; however, it is largely your responsibility to ensure it isn't uploaded in the first place.

What should the upload process look like?

The upload process should look like the following screenshots. The Tranche tool will run on computers using either Windows, OS X, Linux, or Solaris as the operating system. Initially you'll be asked to provide an e-mail address.

Next, you'll click the "Upload" button and a prompt will appear asking for the directory of files to upload.

Finally, the upload bar will progress until it reaches completion and a confirmation message will be presented.

The text in the confirmation e-mail will look similar to the following. Note, the text below is real. If you'd like to play around with verifying an upload via the Tranche tool, you can use the hash and passphrase below.

Thank you for uploading your data. The data is now on-line in the ProteomeCommons.org Tranche network, and it will be included with the HUPO Test Samples (Eqimolar) 2007 study. The data is encrypted, which means only you and the HUPO Test Samples (Eqimolar) data collection team can access the data prior to public release.

If you'd like to verify that the data is on-line or have someone else download a copy of the data, launch the normal Tranche from http://tranche.proteomecommons.org and use the following information.

Tranche Hash: BiHXBPq72FJzZi8lOvyhiwpEBqZVGLBtZV6bYfMmuBXN5nVqF+8l8dJT53vWI4m+1opRYWaUH3SzVlgLwAcqgCZVSikAAAAAAAADWA==

Please save a copy of this information for your records. If you have any questions or comments, please contact ProteomeCommons-Tranche-Users@googlegroups.com

How do I verify that my upload was successful?

If you received a confirmation e-mail regarding the upload (see above), you should be assured that the data is on-line. If you would like to manually double check, you can launch the Tranche tool from http://tranche.proteomecommons.org, click on "Download by Hash String", and manually enter your Tranche hash and passphrase (see below).

If you really want to ensure that the data is on-line, you can download the entire data set using the Tranche tool. You can also send an e-mail to jfalkner@umich.edu and ask that your data is uploaded.

How do I use an anonymous e-mail address?

Spambox.us is a fantastic website that'll make up an e-mail address that automatically forwards e-mail to your real e-mail address for a fixed period of time, e.g. a day, month, or year. Use it.

Help! The upload tool won't start on my computer.

Generally the Java-based upload tool will work out-of-the-box on most computers. We require that you have at least a version of Java installed that was released four years ago. Most every current computer comes with this automatically. If for some reason you don't have Java installed, you can freely download and install the latest version from Sun Microsystem's website. Here is a tutorial.
